Recalls on consumer products can leave business in the lurch for huge losses and there have been a few head scratchers in recent months. From alcohol that has too much alcohol, to potatoes laced with golf balls, this quarter has seen some bizarre recalls that have affected millions of units worldwide. Here are six of the weirdest recalls that have been issued thus far in 2017.
Bombay Sapphire Gin
One of the leading brands of gin worldwide, London Bombay Sapphire, was recalled earlier this year after it was found to be 77 percent alcohol. The product is generally only 40 percent alcohol by volume and was part of a recall after the discrepancy was picked up by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency.
The high proof gin was only found in Canadian retailers and the Liquor Control Board of Ontario suspects that one batch was distilled and bottled at the higher A.B.V. before manufacturers discovered the issue.
McCain Hash Browns
A quantity of hash browns packaged by McCain foods was recalled earlier this spring after they had complaints that some of the potatoes contained golf ball material. In a statement the company revealed that the golf balls may have originated from a golf facility near one of their farms and were harvested along with their potatoes.
The golf ball-laden hash browns were distributed under the Harris Teeter brand and went out to stores in various states including North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, District of Columbia, Delaware, Florida, Georgia and Maryland. They were also branded as Roundy’s Brand Frozen Southern Style Hash Browns.
Frozen Burritos
As many as 30,000 pounds of frozen burritos have been recalled by the Request Foods Inc. company after fears that they products may contain unexpected allergens. The product was marketed under the Atkins brand and includes their 6 ounce chicken with cheese and bean burritos because contain egg and sausage burrito product.
According to the company the products may have failed to include some potential allergens in their warning labels. The burritos in question are marked with a “Best By” date of December 19, 2017 and have been marked as a Class 1 recall. This means “there is reasonable probability that the use of the product will cause serious, adverse health consequences or death.”
Baby Wipes
The Honest Company has announced a recall on selected baby wipes after discovery they could pose the risk of allergic reactions. The wipes in question includes those branded as Honest Diaper Cakes, Baby Basics Gift Sets and Baby Arrival Gift Sets.
The company released a statement about the recall noting that they “believe the affected product is not likely to cause adverse health consequences, however, impacted wipes do have a spotted discoloration and the aesthetics are unacceptable.” They add that “out of an abundance of caution, the Honest Company has decided to voluntarily recall certain lots of this product.”
Trucks Recalled Over Computer Glitch
Fiat Chrysler has announced the recall of 1.25 million Dodge Ram pickup trucks earlier this year after discovering that a fault in the main computer system. The glitch could prevent airbags from deploying the in the event that the vehicle flips over. Thus far the issue has already been linked with one death and several injuries.
The recall includes 2013-16 Ram 1500 and 2500 pickups and 2014-2016 Ram 3500 pickup trucks. Specifically the trucks could fail to deploy these safety features if struck in the undercarriage during a wreck. The recall is set to begin on June 23.
